Grandmother of Brenton Tarrant describes devastation

The man charged in relation to the Christchurch mosque shooting Brenton Tarrant appeared in court on Saturday

Forty-nine people were shot dead and more than 40 others wounded at two mosques in Christchurch on Friday.

Brenton Harrison Tarrant, a 28-year-old from Australia, reportedly smirked and used his shackled right hand to make the "OK" symbol, which the Southern Poverty Law Center notes has been adopted in recent years by white nationalists, neo-Nazis and Klansmen following its emergence as an online trolling hoax.

Tarrant was believed to have met extreme right-wing groups during a visit to Europe two years ago, security sources told United Kingdom paper The Independent.

Turkey has also confirmed it is looking at the man's visits to that country, and Bulgarian authorities said he had visited Bulgaria past year.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the killer as "an extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist".

Tarrant's 74-page manifesto said he first began considering an attack in April and May of 2017 while travelling in France and elsewhere in Western Europe.

Forty-one victims were killed at the Al Noor Mosque, seven died at the Linwood Mosque and another succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

Ardern says Tarrant was not on the radar of either the New Zealand intelligence agencies or the Australian agencies.

".[A] n incredible place filled with the most earnest, kind hearted and hospitable people in the world".

Tragedy has hit the island country of New Zealand as US news outlets are beginning to learn that over 40 people lost their lives in a terrorist attack on two separate mosques.
