HP expands laptop battery recall

HP recalled more batteries in January but gov shutdown delayed news

HP expanded their recall of lithium-ion batteries on Tuesday, after eight new reports in the US of overheating, melting or charring, according to a recall notice.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued an expanded recall notice for batteries sold and installed in some HP laptops and mobile workstations.

The recall was first announced back in January 2018 with about 50,000 units being recalled for "fire and burn hazards".

HP independently announced the recall expansion on January 17, according to the CPSC, which said that it has only just revealed this information due to the government shutdown, which interfered with its ability to announce the recall itself. Visit the website www.HP.com/go/batteryprogram2018 to check if your battery is included in the recall. These batteries are not customer-replaceable.

The recall applies to the following laptop models that were sold between April 2015 and April 2018: HP ProBooks (64x G2 and G3 series, 65x G2 and G3 series, 4xx G4 series); HPx360 (310 G2); HP Pavilion x360 11-inch Notebook PC; and HP 11 Notebook PC. HP will provide free battery replacement services by an authorized technician.

The faulty batteries were shipped in a wide range of products or sold as accessories for those products.

This is part of a continuing series of battery recalls from HP.

As Tom's Hardware reports, HP actually updated the recall in January this year, but not many people heard about it. The Jan. 17 recall was for about 51,000 models, but 41,000 were recalled in June 2016 and 100,000 in January 2017, bringing the total for the past two-and-a-half years to nearly a quarter of a million.

Personal Systems net revenue was up 2 percent year-over-year, even though total units sold declined.

The HP ProBook 445 G6 and HP ProBook 455 G6 include up to 1TB of storage and enhanced security settings.
