Jaguar Land Rover recalls more than 44,000 cars over emissions

British auto maker Jaguar Land Rover has been forced to recall 44,000 cars after tests revealed they may emit "excessive" levels of carbon dioxide.

Land Rover says it is contacting all owners and remedial work will be carried out free of charge.

A new report by industry journal, Automotive News Europe, the European Union's Safety Gate Rapex claims JLR vehicles with 2.0-litre engines (both petrol and diesel) may emit "excessive levels of Carbon dioxide and may not conform with the certified condition".

In a statement, the manufacturer said: "Jaguar Land Rover is conducting a voluntary recall following the identification of Carbon dioxide performance variability with certain Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles fitted with 2.0L diesel or petrol engines".

The recall includes vehicles such as the Land Rover Discovery, Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar F-Pace. Jaguar models affected include the E-Pace, F-Pace, F-Type, XE and XF.

Vehicle emissions have come under increased scrutiny in recent years following Volkswagen's diesel scandal, in which it was found to have installed software to trick emissions tests.

At the same time, global agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions has prompted multiple governments to announce plans to ban the sale of new fossil fuel-powered cars, with the United Kingdom to do so from 2040.

Neil Barlow, DVSA's head of vehicle engineering, said: 'DVSA's priority is to protect everyone from unsafe drivers and vehicles.

JLR's recall is not expected to have a material impact on the company's finances, but comes at a challenging time for the carmaker.

The recall is said to affect vehicles equipped with JLR's 2.0-liter diesel engine in cars built between 2014 and 2018.

A statement from JLR reads: "The modifications will be made free of charge, and every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience to the customer".
