Mass shootings at NZ mosques kill 49; man charged

Australian media broadcast footage from Christchurch shootings despite police warnings

The government of New Zealand has changed its country's terrorist threat level to high.

Police commissioner Mike Bush said 41 people were killed at one mosque and seven at the other.

The shooter also live-streamed the attack.

France is home to the largest Muslim minority population in Western Europe and suffered deadly Islamist militant attacks in 2015 and 2016.

Just 1% of New Zealand's population of nearly five million are Muslim, according to government statistics, less than 50,000 people in 2013. In all, a total of 49 people were killed.

In the aftermath, the country's threat level was raised from low to high, police warned Muslims against going to a mosque anywhere in New Zealand, and the national airline canceled several flights in and out of Christchurch, a city of almost 400,000.

However, what comes across as a freakish part of the awful act was that in the Facebook live-stream of the shooting, one of the gunmen says: "Remember, lads, subscribe to PewDiePie".

Both mosques are in Christchurch's city center and police have placed the two locations on lockdown.

PewDiePie took on to Twitter to respond at the whole incident and wrote: "Just heard news of the devastating reports from New Zealand Christchurch".

A Palestinian man who was in one of the mosques said he saw someone being shot in the head.

At least 49 people have been killed and 20 seriously injured after gunmen opened fire in two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch Friday, a coordinated and unprecedented attack that has shocked the usually peaceful nation.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said, "We New Zealanders were not chosen for this act of violence because we condone this racism, or because we are an enclave of extremism, we were chosen for the very fact that we are none of these things". For many New Zealand was their choice, a place they actively came to and committed themselves to.it was a place where many came to for their safety.

He describes himself as "a private and mostly introverted person" and admits he is racist, adding that he is an "Eco-fascist by nature".

Peneha, who lives next door, said the gunman ran out of the mosque, dropped what appeared to be a semi-automatic weapon in his driveway and fled. "I saw lots of broken glass and bricks on the backside of the mosque", he said.

Two explosive devices that were attached to the suspects' vehicles were also found at the scene.

In the video, the killer spends more than two minutes inside the mosque spraying terrified worshippers with gunfire. The singer bellows, "I am the god of hellfire!" and the gunman drives away.

Home to almost 400,000 people, Christchurch is the largest city on New Zealand's South Island.

Christchurch, a relatively small city in the south of New Zealand, hit global headlines in 2011 when it was struck by a deadly natural disaster.

The massacres took place from 1.40pm this afternoon at the Masjid Al Noor and Linwood Masjid mosques. He said he was not a member of any organization, but had donated to and interacted with many nationalist groups, though he acted alone and no group ordered the attack.

New Zealand is generally considered to be a welcoming country for migrants and refugees. There will be so many people affected.
