Murdered mobster Frank Cali 'lured out of home' before being shot

By Allan Lengel

The day after Castellano's December 1985 murder, The New York Times called the Mob boss' death "highly stylized", but Giuliani dismissed such morbid romanticism.

The reputed "acting boss" of the storied Gambino Crime Family was found shot to death outside his home Wednesday evening.

The Gambino family is one of New York's five historic Italian Mafia families - along with the Genovese, Lucchese, Colombo and Bonanno families.

USA media reported the 53-year-old's death marked the first murder of a NY mob boss in 34 years, since the death of Paul Castellano - another Gambino family boss - by order of John Gotti.

Cali's only mob-related criminal conviction came a decade ago, when he pleaded guilty in an extortion scheme involving a failed attempt to build a NASCAR track on Staten Island.

Charges against members of Mafia operations, including Gambino family operatives, have included murder, loan sharking, gambling and illegal drug distribution, Reuters has reported.

3 takeaways from Duke’s ACC Tournament win over UNC
UNC: The Tar Heels are headed to the NCAA Tournament, though it's unclear whether they've done enough to secure a No. 1 seed. It's also the same floor where Virginia lost a second-round game as a No. 2 seed to seventh-seeded Michigan State in 2015.

Cali had been considered a unifying figure in the years after then-Gambino boss John Gotti, "Dapper Don", was convicted of murder and racketeering in 1992 and sent to prison for life, CNN affiliate WPIX reported. The New York Daily News stated that a family member called 911 and said Cali was run over before he was shot; one witness told the Daily News, "There were like six shots, and then there were three more".

According to reports, Cali's death marks the highest ranking member of a NY crime family to be murdered in decades. Police are now investigating the matter and have yet to arrest anyone in connection.

"We thought those days were over", the city's mayor Bill de Blasio told journalists.

Cali kept a much lower profile than Gotti. "But I guess old habits die hard". He was shot on a tree-lined street in one of New York City's less-glamorous outer boroughs, a short walk from ball fields, a country club and a day camp. Gotti's brother Gene Gotti spent 29 years in prison for heroin distribution, but he got out in September 2018, leading to speculation as to what that could mean for the future of the organization.

The killing was organised by Gotti, authorities said.
