NYPD identifies suspect in slaying of Gambino crime boss Frank Cali

Staten Island

A suspect is in custody in the shooting death of the reputed Gambino crime family boss, according to city police.

A panicked family member called 911, telling a dispatcher Cali was run over before he was shot, though investigators were still looking into whether the gunman mowed the mobster down, sources said.

"There are multiple, multiple angles that we are exploring", Shea said at a news conference at police headquarters.

Cali, 53, was shot six times in the chest by a gunman in a blue pickup truck on Hilltop Terrace near Four Corners Road in Todt Hill about 9:15 p.m. Medics took him to Staten Island University Hospital, where he died.

Police said surveillance video captures the shooter, and the pick-up believed to be the getaway truck.

Defense attorney James Vogts conceded at that same hearing that "what happened in the school that morning was horrific". In their original complaint, the families outlined some of the marketing practices allegedly used by Bushmaster.

Police are still investigating the motive behind Cali's murder, he said, including whether it might have been a domestic altercation or a mob-related killing. Cali was widely viewed as the leader of the notorious Gambino crime family.

The 53-year-old Cali, who was shot to death on Wednesday outside his Staten Island home, was allegedly the head of the Gambino family, one of the five Italian-American Mafia families that have historically dominated organized crime in NY and New Jersey. News accounts since 2015 said he had ascended to the top spot. He was sentenced to 16 months in federal prison and was released in 2009.

The last Mafia boss to be rubbed out in New York City was Gambino don "Big Paul" Castellano, who was assassinated while getting out of a black limousine outside a high-end Manhattan steakhouse in 1985.

Police fear the murder of Cali will provoke revenge attacks.
