Rescues and evacuations as floodwaters breach levees in US Midwest

Elkhorn River Flood Warning

A flood warning for northern and parts of central Iowa has been extended through Saturday evening as "local creeks and streams, as well as the main river branches are running high", according to the weather service.

Friday morning, the Missouri River level at St. Joseph was just below 25 feet, heading swiftly to 27 feet, considered major flood stage.

Midland city officials say Emerson Park, Dublin Avenue, West St. Andrews Road, Currie Parkway, Pomranky Road, St. Charles Street and Poseyville Road likely will be under water this weekend.

The plant continues to operate safely and "there is no threat to plant employees or to the public", the utility said in a release. The Spencer Hydroelectric dam at the Niobrara river was lost when the dam failed earlier on Thursday morning. The city is now working to bolster levees. They could be tested this year.

Flooding remained a concern in the lower Missouri River region, with the weather service issuing warnings along the river and its tributaries from southeastern South Dakota to St. Louis.

Elkhorn River Flood Warning

Rain fall average of about 0.6 inches combined with about 2 inches of water from melting snow has led to "significant rises in the rivers", according to the National Weather Service. The mayor of Columbus also told the affiliate stations that person was a farmer on a tractor out to rescue someone from the flood waters.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed an emergency disaster proclamation and activated the state emergency operations center Thursday. The weather service recorded a 60 miles per hour wind gust at Indianapolis International Airport.

Major to moderate flooding has been reported across Nebraska.

The NWS has warned residents that flash flooding can be deadly and has issued warnings and advice for those who live in affected areas.
