Social media giants say taking action to remove Christchurch shooting content

New Zealand mosque shooting Why couldnt tech companies stop the video from going viral

Later on Friday officials reported 49 dead and 20 wounded in the shooting.

At one point, the shooter even paused to give a shout-out to one of YouTube's top personalities, known as PewDiePie, with tens of millions of followers, who has made jokes criticized as anti-Semitic and posted Nazi imagery in his videos.

The problem is the video is being downloaded and edited then uploaded and shared again, creating a new visual footprint that the likes of Facebook, YouTube and Twitter need to track down and block.

Videos and posts that glorify violence are against Facebook's rules, but Facebook has drawn criticism for responding slowly to such items, including video of a slaying in Cleveland and a live-streamed killing of a baby in Thailand.

Theresa May's spokeswoman said: "Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other providers have taken action to remove the video and other propaganda related to the attack".

Hours after the shooting, Reddit took down two subreddits known for sharing video and pictures of people being killed or injured -R/WatchPeopleDie and R/Gore - apparently because users were sharing the mosque attack video. It remains unclear exactly how many perpetrators were involved. It said it had removed the unverified video along with the shooter's Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Facebook's Australia-New Zealand policy director Mia Garlick has confirmed the video has been removed. "Twitter has rigorous processes and a dedicated team in place for managing exigent and emergency situations such as this". "We also cooperate with law enforcement to facilitate their investigations as required". "Please know we are working vigilantly to remove any violent footage", YouTube said in a tweet.

Frustrated with years of similar obscene online crises, politicians around the globe on Friday voiced the same conclusion: social media is failing.

Also in a social media post just before the attack, an account that is believed to belong to one of the attackers posted a link to an 87-page manifesto that was filled with anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim ideas and explanations for an attack. She said the attacks were shown live on Facebook for 17 minutes before being stopped.

Users intent on sharing the violent video took several approaches.

Copies of the footage reviewed by Reuters showed that some users had recorded the video playing on their own phones or computers to create a new version with a digital fingerprint different from the original. Magnus Ranstorp of the Swedish National Defense College told the Associated Press that the manifesto published by the New Zealand assailant, Brenton Tarrant, is shorter and "more sloppy" than the Breivik publication-popular on the dark recesses of the internet; claims proliferated Friday that Tarrant was in contact with Breivik devotees. It said it deleted the video thousands of times but it was still able to be found.

YouTube tweeted about the shooting video, "Our hearts are broken over today's awful tragedy in New Zealand". "As with any major tragedy, we will work cooperatively with the authorities".

"Tech companies have a responsibility to do the morally right thing. Freedom means you don't have to ask for permission first, and by default, you can say what you want", Kafka quoted from a Zuckerberg response in 2017. Politicians in multiple countries said social media companies need to be more vigilant.
