Social Media Platforms Rush To Stop Spread Of New Zealand Shooting Footage

UK interior minister says social media firms must act after New Zealand shootings

The shooter behind the New Zealand mosque attacks sent his manifesto outlining his sick philosophy to government officials and media outlets less than 10 minutes before the attack that killed 49 people, according to a report.

As of writing, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter, have reportedly wiped most of the copies of the video from their platforms - though when exactly they managed to take it down and how much time it took remains unclear.

"New Zealand Police alerted us to a video on Facebook shortly after the livestream commenced and we removed both the shooter's Facebook account and the video. We're also removing any praise or support for the crime and the shooter or shooters as soon as we're aware", she told CNN.

Ms Mia Garlick, a spokesman for Facebook in New Zealand, said: "We will continue working directly with the New Zealand police as their response and investigation continue".

But hours after the attack copies of the video were still available on Facebook, Twitter and Alphabet Inc's YouTube, as well as Facebook-owned Instagram and WhatsApp.

"A person involved with the attacks also appeared to post regularly to the "/pol/ - Politically Incorrect" forum on 8chan, a online discussion site known for allowing virtually any content, including hate speech.

Reacting to a tweet in which YouTube claimed it was working to remove the footage, Mr Javid said YouTube, Google, Facebook and Twitter "really need to do more to stop violent extremism being promoted on your platforms". Police said a fourth person was arrested Friday but that was "not related to these events".

"Our hearts are broken over today's awful tragedy in New Zealand", YouTube, which is operated by Google, said in a Twitter posting.

She said platforms like YouTube have the ability to find and remove violent videos with keyword searches, but that more people are needed to monitor the platforms.

Facebook and YouTube were created to share pictures of babies, puppies and other wholesome things, he said, "but they were expanded at such a scale and built with no safeguards such that they were easy to hijack by the worst elements of humanity".

The videos show the gunman driving to one mosque, entering and shooting randomly at people inside.

Once a video is posted online, people who want to spread the material race to action.

Just before the alleged gunman opened fire, he urged viewers to subscribe to the popular YouTube channel PewDiePie, which itself has been criticized for posting offensive footage in the past.

"This is a case where you're giving a platform for hate", he said.

Other violent crimes that have been live-streamed on the internet include a father in Thailand in 2017 who broadcast himself killing his daughter on Facebook Live.

In August past year, a shooting at a Madden NFL 19 video-game tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, was captured on live video. "We stand here and condemn, absolutely the attack that occurred today by an extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist", Morrison said.
