Suspect in New Zealand mosque killings makes first court appearance

Shooting Reported At Second Mosque In New Zealand's Christchurch Updates

At least 49 people were killed at mosques full of worshippers attending Friday prayers in Christchurch. In addition, 48 people have been injured and are now being treated at a Christchurch hospital.

An Australian man in his 20s was arrested and has been charged with murder. Forty-one people were killed at one mosque, and seven people were killed at the second mosque. One other died in hospital. I guess, if you look at what happened in New Zealand, perhaps that's a case.

It has been widely reported that the suspected gunman in the New Zealand massacre took to social media platforms to live stream his attacks.

Our national security threat level has been lifted from low to high.

"It has no place in New Zealand", Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern tweeted.

Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg said the attack brought back memories of 2011, when anti-Muslim extremist Anders Breivik killed 77 people at a youth gathering on a Norwegian island: "It shows that extremism is nurtured and that it lives in many places". Asked if she agreed that white supremacy was "not really" a threat, Ardern said, "no".

We were not chosen for this act of violence because we condone racism, because we are en enclave for extremism.

"We've seen a similar sort of thing in Canada a couple of years ago at Sainte-Foy, and we join in the grief and the horror that this type of an event would occur". Because we represent diversity, kindness, compassion, a home for those who share our values, refuge for those who need it.

"And those values will not and can not be shaken by this attack". "ISCC and MAT express deep sympathies and solidarity with the Muslim community of New Zealand". "Our city has changed forever today", Mayor Lianne Dalziel said in a statement.

Ambulance officers transfer a boy to Dunedin Public Hospital, New Zealand, Nov. 14, 1990, after he had been shot in Aramoana.

New Zealand's ambassador-designate to the U.S., Rosemary Banks, told NPR that authorities are "convinced this particular event is over".

None of those arrested had a criminal history or was on any watchlist in New Zealand or Australia. "My heart and thoughts go out to the victims, families and everyone affected by this tragedy".

President Trump described the attack as a "horrible massacre" and said the United States stood by New Zealand. The 17-minute video includes multiple instances of the gunman firing on victims inside the mosque. Police have not identified the suspects.

At mid-afternoon Friday Scheer's new statement issued by email and posted to Facebook added mention of the fact two mosques were the targets and condemned a "cowardly and hateful attack on the Muslim community".

Twitter and Google, which owns YouTube, say they're working to remove any video of the shootings from their sites, as well.

Both a semi-automatic shotgun and rifle were used in at least one of the shootings, The Washington Post reports.

Former NSW personal trainer Brenton Harrison Tarrant, 28, appeared in a Christchurch court on Saturday where he was formally charged with one count of murder.

This is a developing story. Police Commissioner Paula Bennett at the time accepted recommendations that it be illegal for gang members to carry guns, but reportedly stopped short of implementing a number of other rules involving gun storage and ammunition. We will update as the situation develops.
