Alex Ovechkin and Andrei Svechnikov dropped the gloves early in Game 3 on Monday night, and it went poorly for the Carolina Hurricanes rookie. Ovechkin caught Svechnikov with his right fist, sending the back of his head crashing hard into the ice.

Svechnikov lay on the ice, struggling to get up following the fight as a trainer came to attend him.

It was the first-ever National Hockey League fight for Svechnikov, who was selected second overall by the Hurricanes in 2018. According to Hockey Fights, the 33-year-old hasn't had a bout since December 12, 2010, when he fought Brandon Dubinsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Carolina said Svechnikov would miss the rest of the game with an upper-body injury.

Back in 2010, Ovechkin fought Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky in a December 12 game against the Rangers. The Capitals lead the best-of-seven first round series 2-1. For Svechnikov, the No. 2 pick in last year's draft who helped lead the 'Canes back into the postseason, it was his first in the big leagues.

It's not the first time the teenager has meet the Russian superstar.
