Amazon tipped to launch free, ad-supported music streaming tier

Amazon tipped to launch a free, ad-supported music service to take on Spotify

The goal of releasing such a service would reportedly be to give its users a free music streaming alternative to be used through its Echo speakers.

Ad-supported free music streaming services remain popular with a number of consumers. The unlimited options start at $7.99 for Prime Members and $9.99 for the Music Unlimited service.

Amazon isn't new to the music streaming game.

According to, ecommerce giant Amazon is now in talks with major music labels to provide a free, ad-supported music streaming service. Amazon has said "tens of millions" of paid customers listen to Prime Music and its standalone Amazon Music Unlimited service.

Spotify is now the only music streaming service that offers a free, ad-supported option, and this version has more users (116 million) than its paid alternative (96 million). The streaming company reports a paid subscriber base of 96 million, with another 116 million using the free option, per its most recent quarterly earnings report.

Unsurprisingly, Amazon is also expected to promote this free, ad-supported service tier in close relation with its Echo smart speakers, aiming to boost the popularity and value proposition of both products. The other big players, like Apple and Google, offer limited time free trials which then turn into full premium accounts at around £10 per month.
