Bill Weld officially announces he’s challenging Trump for GOP nomination in 2020

Bill Weld (R) announced that he is running for president in 2020.

"America has a choice", says the narrator of a video announcing Weld's candidacy. "I am ready to lead that fight", he said.

Although Weld will try to woo moderate Republicans turned off by Mr. Trump by touting his socially liberal but fiscally conservative platform, he will face an uphill battle matching the incumbent president's institutional support, war chest and electoral infrastructure. "The country deserves to have some fiscal constraint and conservatism". In 2008, Weld backed Barack Obama over John McCain but Mitt Romney over Obama four years later.

Bill Weld is giving President Donald Trump a run for his money.

But the challenge could have the potential for intraparty strife, which could weaken the incumbent or expose vulnerabilities that would later be exploited by a general election rival.

PM playing dirty politics: Capt Amarinder Singh on Modi’s Jallianwala remark
Thousands of unarmed men, women and children had gathered at the Jallianwala Bagh, a walled public garden in Amritsar , on the afternoon of April 13, 1919.

Weld said he will not run as an Independent if he does not win the Republican nomination. Mr Weld has released a campaign video which showcases his political style against the current president's.

"I spent seven years in the Justice Department trying to keep the politics out of law enforcement, he's trying to put it in", Weld said.

This sum outpaces the political funding of individual Democratic candidates. Helms dug in his heels and refused to schedule a hearing on the nomination, claiming among other things that Weld's support for medical marijuana and needle exchange programs for drug users disqualified him from serving in Mexico because of that country's history of drug trafficking.

Weld fired back at Helms, suggesting it was un-American for Helms to refuse to hold a public hearing on a high-profile ambassadorial nomination.

Bill Weld, 73, a former governor of MA governor, announced that he would be making the rare move against an incumbent president by calling on "patriotic men and women across our great nation to stand and plant a flag".
