Blizzard Warning in Effect for Six States as Rare April Storm Hits

First responders check on drivers following a multi-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 80 near Waverly Neb. Saturday Feb. 23 2019. Blizzard conditions are expected to affect parts of the state later this week

A massive spring storm is bringing blizzard conditions to several central USA states, leading officials to close hundreds of schools and hundreds of miles of roads.

Transportation officials closed Interstate 29 from east central South Dakota to the North Dakota border and said other stretches of major interstates were likely to close as conditions deteriorated.

The Minnesota State Patrol said it had responded to more than 200 crashes statewide since Wednesday, while the National Guard stood ready to rescue any stranded motorists. Above, a pair of semi tractor-trailer rigs jackknifed and collided near the Highway 15-68 intersection south of New Ulm.

The National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings for much of South Dakota and western Minnesota, and from parts of northwestern Colorado to northwestern Kansas, and western and central Nebraska. The National Weather Service reported that daily snowfall records had already fallen in La Crosse, Wausau and Green Bay.

"Really hope this is the last snow storm we'll have to post about this spring, the National Weather Service tweeted. Road closures will be likely".

As much as 18 inches (46 centimetres) of snow has fallen in parts of South Dakota, where Gov. Kristi Noem has closed state offices in much of the state for a second day as heavy snow and strong winds make travel conditions risky.

Snow and ice accumulating on power lines along with strong winds were responsible for the power outages, Matt Lindstrom, a spokesman for Minneapolis-based Xcel Energy, said.

"Hopefully this time it will be a slow snowmelt", Roth said.

The Plains could get more than 2 feet of snow by Friday morning, and South Dakota could be the hardest hit, with more than 30 inches possible.

More than 30,000 homes and businesses were without power in Minnesota, 14,200 in Iowa and 22,700 in MI by midday on Thursday, according to PowerOutages.us, a website that tracks power outages.

Heavy snow and strong winds hammered parts of the central USA on Thursday, knocking out power to tens of thousands of people and creating hazardous travel conditions a day after pummeling Colorado. Forecasters in New Mexico said the winds also would make travel hard on north-south oriented roads such as Interstate 25. High winds are making travel even more treacherous. Forecasters said this week's storm will swell rivers again, but maybe not as much.

In Nebraska where people are still recovering from last month's floods, farmer Brad Wilkins said, "Instead of Nebraska Strong it should be Nebraska exhausted".

Forecasters had expected the extreme weather to be a bomb cyclone Wednesday as the storm whipped the Rockies and Plains and delivered a temperature shock to a region enjoying springlike conditions. "Once the storm is done and things start to dry out a bit, we will get back to patching".
