Chief: Boy thrown from Mall of America balcony being treated

Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda thegrio

Police received an initial report at 10:17am saying a child had fallen from the third level of the mall, but witnesses reported the child was pushed or thrown by a man, Potts said.

WCCO-TV in Minnesota reported a witness heard the boy's mother shouting "Everybody pray, everybody pray". He said she was screaming, "Everybody pray, everybody pray".

The suspect, Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, who is from the area, was charged with attempted homicide, police said in a statement.

Mr Potts continued: "At this time we do not believe that there is a relationship between the child or the family of the child".

Hanneman said his picture has been removed from the page because there have been "multiple people trying to copy this GoFundMe page and the family is still requesting privacy and has elected at this point not to share photos at this time"'. The boy was rushed to a local hospital with "significant injuries" from the 40-foot fall, authorities said, and was still being treated 24 hours later. The family doen't know the suspect and are "completely clueless" as to why the suspect targeted the little boy, according to the GoFundMe page.

At least one parent was with the young victim Friday morning when Aranda allegedly threw him from the third-floor balcony.

He asked the public to keep the boy's family and first responders in their thoughts and prayers.

"The child is still alive and receiving care", he said. Police credited a concerned bystander for chasing the suspect, and the Mall security for tracking him to the transportation station where he was apprehended. In one 2015 incident, Aranda was charged with damaging stores by throwing items from the upper level to the lower level, according to court records obtained by WCCO.

"We think this is a very isolated incident", he said. Aranda also held previous convictions for obstruction of the legal process/interfering with a peace officer, fifth-degree assault, trespassing and damage to property.

'Our immediate and only concern is for the wellbeing of the family and the child, as well as for any individuals who may have witnessed the incident. He tossed a glass of water in the woman's face, then threw a glass of tea at her leg, shattering the cup.

For these past charges, Aranda was banned from the mall through July 2016.
