Facebook tweaks tools for remembering those who have died

Today, Facebook announced that only friends and family members can make that request.

Facebook states that these decisions were made based on feedback from experts and academics, as well as from those of varying religions and cultural backgrounds.

If an account hasn't yet been memorialised, Facebook uses the AI to help keep it from showing up in places that might cause distress, like recommending that person be invited to events or sending a birthday reminder to their friends.

Figures from the social network showed that 30 million people view memorialised profiles - the accounts of people who have died - each month.

Facebook is trying to improve the ways people can remember loved ones on its platform.

Facebook has also introduced a new "Tributes" section to memorialized profiles, "a separate tab on memorialized profiles where friends and family can share posts - all while preserving the original timeline of their loved one".

'60 Minutes' will air 'Game of Thrones' final season sneak peek

Facebook is also giving more control to legacy contacts - the individuals who are responsible for looking after a person's Facebook account after it's been memorialized.

Facebook's algorithms may be smart, but they haven't always been tactful when it comes to dealing with the profiles of deceased users - but that could be about to change.

"Legacy contacts can now moderate the posts shared to the new tributes section by changing tagging settings, removing tags and editing who can post and see posts".

Those under the age of 18 will not be able to nominate legacy contacts, but parents and guardians can contact Facebook directly to gain access.

It works by allowing users to assign "legacy contacts", who will be given the power to first convert a profile to a memorialised one, and then to moderate the comments left on the site from thereon out. Previously, this was not an option - any profile without a legacy contact listed would be locked upon becoming memorialized, while users under the age of 18 can not nominate a legacy contact. That's why it's so important that those closest to the deceased person can decide when to take that step. "We're working to get better and faster at this", Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg wrote in a statement.
