Sydney Monfries will be honored with posthumous bachelor's degree from Fordham University after dying on the school's Bronx campus on Sunday.

Just weeks from graduation, a 22-year-old OR woman joined some friends in a senior tradition at Fordham University - climbing the stairs to the top of the New York university's iconic clock tower, the New York Daily News reported.

Monfries, a journalism student set to graduate in the coming weeks, tripped on debris on the spiral staircase, fell 30 feet from one level to another, and later died.

Ms Monfries' family rushed to her hospital bed and were accompanied by two priests, the Post reported.

Students were then told they needed to take a photo outside one of the top windows with against the skyline.

According to the university, Monfries had climbed the clock tower with some friends.

Keating Hall was locked before the students gained entry to the tower, Fordham's Senior Director of Communications Gina Vergel told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

There have been no reports of anyone falling from the tower, according to CBS New York. "You have to go into the tunnels underground and you have to go into the bell tower". Unconscious when the paramedics arrived, time was lost as they struggled to get Monfries out of the narrow tower staircase while on a stretcher. "If he wasn't there, I don't know, she might have been worse off", he said.

'She couldn't breath. She hit her head, ' he said.

"There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise - and mere weeks from graduation", said Rev. Joseph M. McShane, Fordham University president, in a statement, USA Today reported.
