Man Threw Child Over Balcony After A Woman Rejected Him

Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda

Police say Emmanuel Aranda admitted he had come to the mall a day earlier seeking to kill someone but it did not "work out".

"This crime has shocked the community", Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said in a statement, adding, "That a child, with his mother, at a safe public area like a mall, could be violently attacked for no reason is chilling for everyone".

Stephen Tillitt, an attorney representing the victim's family, told reporters the child remains in critical condition.

The child's mother reportedly told authorities that she and her son had been with a friend and her child on the mall's third floor outside the Rain Forest Cafe when a male she had never seen before approached them. Aranda at one point was banned from the mall.

Police say he also threw water in a woman's face at the Mall of America and has a warrant for his arrest from IL for assault.

"During my most recent visit with Landen, holding his hand revealed a calm and warm aura in his room, one that likely is contributed from all of the huge outpouring of prayer and support from everyone across the globe", Noah Hanneman wrote Monday night on a GoFundMe page collecting donations to help with the family's expenses.

"Please respect their great need and desire for privacy during that journey and do not attempt to contact them for additional information or interviews".

That man - later identified as Aranda - is alleged to have come so close to them that the child's mother asked if they were in his way and should move.

Foxx's office issued a statement recusing her on February 19, though they later claimed she "did not formally recuse herself ". Joseph Magats, the First Assistant in the State's Attorney's office, ultimately made the decision not to prosecute the case.

He did not follow through but returned to the mall Friday still intending to kill an adult.

Aranda told police he knew what he was planning to do was wrong. He told police he was angry at being rejected by women.

Regarding the 5-year-old's injuries, "It makes me sick really makes me sick, my prayers go out to the family for that poor little boy", she said.

Court files show that judges have repeatedly ordered Aranda to undergo mental health counseling, abstain from alcohol and drugs and take prescribed medications.

The boy was thrown from the third-floor balcony of the mall and chosen at random. He was arrested at the mall weeks later for aggressively panhandling and harassing two women and for throwing drinking glasses at diners in a mall restaurant.

Police have also encountered Aranda at a Minneapolis library.

Officers found him at a bus stop across the street and arrested him without incident.
