Briar Cliff student dies after falling 100 feet on Arkansas hiking trail

A 20-year-old college student fell off a cliff while posing for a photo in Arkansas, plunging 100 feet to her death.

Briar Cliff University junior Andrea Norton was re-positioning herself for a picture Saturday when she fell from Hawksbill Crag, a popular hiking destination near Jasper, the Sioux City Journal reported.

Ms Norton was at Hawksbill Crag, also known as Whitaker Point, when she fell - a popular spot often frequented by couples to taking photos together.

Several people have died from falls at the site in recent years, Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler said.

Norton played volleyball at her university and the team has released a statement about her death.

According to university newspaper the Observer, emergency crews responded to the scene just before 3:30 a.m., and Monfries had suffered serious injuries to her head and pelvis.

"Andrea embodied BCU's values in everything she did including her compassion for all, a love for the environment and an openness to everyone she met".

Norton attended Briar Cliff under scholarship for symphony choir and women's volleyball, her obituary says. The school is working out arrangements with Norton's family for a memorial service in the near future, a BCU spokeswoman said Sunday afternoon. #22 on the court, #1 in our hearts.

Wheeler said he's in contact with Norton's family.

Norton, from Hot Springs, South Dakota, was part of the school's volleyball team. As a program, and as her coach- condolences to her family and friends during this time'.
