Three killed in Everest airport crash

A police official was among those killed and the injured have been airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment according to The Himalayan Times

At least three people were killed when a Summit Air plane collided with a parked (Manang Air) helicopter while taking off for Ramechhap at Lukla airport in Nepal on Sunday morning.

The Twin Otter plane was preparing for take-off from Tenzing- Hillary airport at Lukla, which is considered one of the most risky in the world because of its short runway and perilous approach surrounded by mountains.

The injured were airlifted to Kathmandu by helicopter, Nepal police spokesman Uttam Raj Subedi said.

Tribhuvan International Airport spokesperson Pratap Babu Tiwari said that S Dhungana, co-pilot of the plane, and Assistant Sub-Inspector Ram Bahadur Khadka, who was stationed at the helipad, were killed in the incident.

In spring, domestic airline companies conduct over 50 flights everyday to Lukla, known as Tenzing Hillary airport.

The incident occurred near the gateway to Mount Everest when the plane skidded off the runway, hitting the helicopter of Manang AirSummit Air crash.

Summit Air's pilot Captain RB Rokaya and flight attendant R Lama are safe.

Air crashes are common in mostly mountainous Nepal, home to eight of the world's 14 highest mountain peaks, including Mount Everest. Only helicopters and small winged aircraft are allowed in this airspace. The airfield is notorious for its short runway and perilous approach, sitting at an elevation of over 2,800 meters.

In February a helicopter carrying seven people including the country's tourism minister crashed in bad weather in eastern Nepal, killing seven all on board.
