UN says 120 killed since fighting broke out in Libya

Over 120 killed, nearly 600 wounded in Libya fighting: WHO

The eastern-based army has been leading a military campaign against the government in the capital Tripoli since earlier this month, attempting to take over the city.

Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi met with Hifter in Cairo on Sunday, the presidency said, without providing further details.

In a brief statement, Egypt's presidential palace said that during the talks Mr Sisi emphasised Egypt's support for "combating terrorism and extremist groups and militias to restore peace and stability for Libyan citizens across their country".

Haftar, who was exiled in the United States for two decades, returned to Libya in 2011 when the revolution erupted, commanding forces that eventually toppled dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

The meeting was attended by Egypt's intelligence chief Abbas Kamel.

Haftar backs a rival administration based in eastern Libya that refuses to recognise the UN-backed unity government led by Fayez al-Sarraj.

Haftar, 75, a former general in Gaddafi's army who later joined the revolt against him, moved his troops out of their eastern stronghold to take the oil-rich desert south earlier this year before sweeping up to Tripoli at the start of April.

United Nations envoy Ghassan Salame said a school was bombed in the town of Ain Zara, around 15 kilometres southeast of Tripoli, without saying who was responsible. "No matter how obstinate one becomes, there is no solution except a political one".

A spokesman from the sheriff's office said "Initial information indicates that this was a tragic accident for Mr Hajos". A second call came from another person at the scene who reported a medical emergency involving a large bird, said Lt.

The World Health Organisation tweeted that it "strongly condemns repeated attacks on health care workers, vehicles".

The fighting killed and injured hundreds of people, and forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes.

Haftar has defied global calls to halt his battle against fighters loyal to the UN-backed Government of National Accord based in Tripoli.

"Haftar's warplanes have been targeting several locations in and around Tripoli and also warplanes with the GNA have been targeting Haftar's locations south of Tripoli", Abdelwahed said.

It is not clear whether Gen Haftar's surprise march on Tripoli was launched with the prior knowledge or the approval of the Egyptians. The UN-backed government in Tripoli vowed to fight back.

"On Sunday, GNA military spokesman Mohammed Ghnounou told Sputnik that forces loyal to the GNA leadership had downed a warplane belonging to Haftar's army".

His lightning drive appears to have united diverse factions in western Libya in the defense of Tripoli.
