Alarming new report boosts fears about measles in Travis County

839 cases of measles reported in 23 states; no confirmed cases in Alabama

Public health officials blame the measles resurgence on the spread of misinformation about vaccines.

The United States so far this year has recorded 764 cases of measles in 23 states, its largest outbreak since public health officials in 2000 declared the disease eradicated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But New York has the biggest outbreak, accounting for nearly 700, or more than 80 percent, of the cases nationwide. Up to 90 per cent of people who are exposed will catch the virus if not immunised.

A total of 75 new cases were reported in the week ending May 10, among which 41 were reported in New York City and 25 in nearby Rockland County.

Lawmakers in Oregon, New Jersey, New York, Iowa, Vermont and Minnesota are considering bills to eliminate non-medical exemptions that allow unvaccinated children to attend public schools.

The vaccine is 93% effective against measles after one dose and 97% effective after two doses.

US, Russia 'share same objective' on North Korea: Mike Pompeo
He added that the US would not tolerate similar engagement in the upcoming 2020 election. He also was critical of US sanctions punishing countries doing business with Iran.

About one or two out of every 1,000 people who get measles will die from the disease, but the illness has not caused a death in the USA since 2015, according to the CDC. According to health officials, most of the new cases were reported in New York City and its suburbs, where hundreds of cases have been reported this year.

"We saw. a lot of kids with measles and pneumonia, measles and croup, measles and acute encephalitis", says Dr. Joel Forman, who was just starting his pediatric residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City in the summer 1990.

Measles is a virus that brings fever and rash, it is highly infectious and anyone who is not vaccinated against the virus can be infected at any age.

Measles was once common in the United States but gradually became rare after vaccination campaigns that started in the 1960s.

As for adults, the CDC recommends that those who were born during or after 1957 who do not have evidence of immunity against measles should get at least one dose of MMR.
