Autopilot in use before Tesla hit semi

Location of Telsa crash

The second was on March 23, 2018 in Mountain View, California, involving a Tesla Model X; a lawsuit filed against Tesla by the family of the victim of that crash alleging Autopilot defects was announced earlier this month.

The NTSB preliminary report on the March 1 collision doesn't spell out what the car's sensors detected as the vehicle approached the truck. The driver apparently wasn't steering in the eight seconds before the collision, according to NTSB.

Neither the data nor the videos indicated the driver or the Autopilot system braked or tried to avoid the trailer, the report stated.

The driver of the Model 3, Jeremy Beren Banner, perished in the crash.

Tesla said in a statement that after the driver engaged the system he "immediately removed his hands from the wheel".

The car's speed was also listed as 13 miles per hour above the posted speed limit.

Neither Brown nor the vehicle braked for a tractor-trailer, which had turned left in front of the Tesla and was crossing its path.

Tesla said back in 2016 that a subsequent update to Autopilot would've saved the driver's life in that particular instance, but it is unclear the degree to which the two fatal incidents are similar beyond the superficial circumstances.

Five dead after two planes carrying cruise ship passengers collide mid-air
That group was returning from a sightseeing tour of Misty Fjords when the crash occurred, Taquan said in a statement. Taquan Air, a regional airline flying one of the planes, canceled all flights while the crash is being investigated.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also investigating the Delray Beach and said Thursday it is "carefully evaluating all available data and will share any findings upon conclusion of its investigation".

The vehicle drove beneath the trailer, killing the driver, in a crash that is strikingly similar to one that happened on the other side of Florida in 2016 that also involved use of Autopilot.

NTSB noted in its final 2017 report into the 2016 crash that the driver was over reliant on Tesla's Autopilot, which was also engaged when it crashed.

According to the report, the driver did not appear to have his hands on the wheel and neither he nor the Autopilot took any evasive action.

After that crash, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company made changes in its system so radar would play more of a role in detecting objects. "Our data shows that, when used properly by an attentive driver who is prepared to take control at all times, drivers supported by Autopilot are safer than those operating without assistance", the spinner said.

On that occasion Tesla did not reveal whether Autopilot had spotted the barrier.

In a statement Thursday, Tesla said it was saddened by the crash and that drivers have traveled more than one billion miles while using Autopilot. "For the past three quarters we have released quarterly safety data directly from our vehicles which demonstrates that".

Critics of the company's self-driving software contend that Tesla's means of assessing whether drivers have their hands on the steering wheel - as advised when Autopilot is active - is inadequate because it only measures torque - force applied by the driver to turn the wheel.
