Barr taps U.S. attorney in CT to review origins of Russian Federation probe

Barr told the Senate Judiciary panel that his team will determine whether there was any improper "spying" on the Trump campaign in 2016, including whether intelligence collection began earlier than previously known and how many confidential informants the Federal Bureau of Investigation used.

Durham, the USA attorney in CT, has been tapped by the nation's chief law enforcement officer to dig into the probe's inception, The New York Times reported Monday night, citing two individuals familiar with the matter.

While Durham has been appointed to this special investigative assignment, he is notably not a special counsel, a role that would come with increased authority. While speaking to reporters outside of the White House Tuesday, the president said the investigation proved there was no collusion even after special counsel Robert Mueller employed "18 angry people". "An informant working for USA intelligence posed as a Cambridge University research assistant in September 2016 to try to probe George Papadopoulos, then a Trump foreign policy adviser, on the campaign's possible ties to Russian Federation, it emerged earlier this month".

Trump and his supporters have seized on both to accuse the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation of unlawfully spying on his campaign. According to the document, the investigation did not find any evidence of collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's campaign team.

Congressional Republicans have also indicated they intend to examine how the investigation that shadowed Trump's presidency for almost two years began and whether there are any legal concerns.

Space shocker: Earth's moon is shrinking, experiencing seismic activities
Enrollment in the program has declined since 2011, leading to a surplus of almost NZ$13.6 billion, according to the budget office. The popular opinion among geologists is that the quakes on Mars and the Moon doesn't have to do with tectonic plates at all.

The Durham inquiry is separate from an investigation by the Justice Department's Inspector General.

U.S. Attorney General William Barr speaks during a farewell ceremony for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, U.S., May 9, 2019.

President Trump nominated Durham, a Department of Justice attorney since 1982, to be the U.S. Attorney in CT in 2017. At the time, Connecticut's two Democratic senators, Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, called Durham a "fierce, fair prosecutor" who knows how to try tough cases. Durham specializes in investigating potential wrongdoing by national security officials.

Durham was named by Barr several weeks ago, said the source, who confirmed it to Reuters anonymously because the Justice Department has not made a public announcement.
