Elon Musk offers glimpse of SpaceX's internet satellites

Elon Musk just showed off 60 of the first SpaceX satellites that could change the internet as we know it

But they lack equipment that would link them into a mesh network, and are not meant to become part of SpaceX's planned network of around 12,000 broadband satellites, SpaceX president and chief operating officer Gwynne Shotwell said last week.

The satellites are production designs, unlike two pathfinder models launched early a year ago, SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk said on Twitter.

According to Shotwell, the 60 satellites set to be launched are still prototypes.

The Starlink satellites, as they're called, are part of Musk's plans to build an unprecedented network of internet-providing spacecraft.

The Federal Communications Commission has issued SpaceX permission to launch two groups of satellites for the Starlink project.

Musk highlighted that these satellites are "production design", unlike February 2018's proof of concept Tintin launch.

Space shocker: Earth's moon is shrinking, experiencing seismic activities
Enrollment in the program has declined since 2011, leading to a surplus of almost NZ$13.6 billion, according to the budget office. The popular opinion among geologists is that the quakes on Mars and the Moon doesn't have to do with tectonic plates at all.

This will not be SpaceX's first launch of the satellites.

As you'll be able to inform, the housing is stuffed to the gills - Musk added that the satellites are "flat-packed", without the dispenser you would possibly anticipate for some missions.

SpaceX is another step closer to launching satellites into the atmosphere to provide the world with widespread internet coverage. This first batch of 60 will also be used for testing, but will do more to pave the way for the constellation that the company hopes will be sufficiently deployed by 2024. Elon Musk said on Twitter that Starlink will only need about 420 satellites for minor coverage, likely spanning just the United States.

The dream of high-speed internet delivered from space may be realized by Starlink, but it's going to take a lot of work. Shotwell said SpaceX could launch two to six more Starlink missions this year, depending on how this first flight goes, according to Space News.

It's unclear how many launches will be needed to get all the hardware up in orbit, and for now Musk only previewed 17 such missions.
