Gilead To Donate HIV Prevention Pill Truvada To 200,000 People

It was announced on Thursday (May 9) that pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) drug Truvada will be made available for free for almost a quarter of a million people in the United States for 11 years.

The CDC itself had come under fire from activists for not making PrEP more widely available and affordable - especially in the wake of President Trump's "Ending the HIV Epidemic" plan, mentioned above by Azar, which cites PrEP as a key tool in tackling the AIDS crisis.

The drug has a list price of $20,000 per patient each year, making the donation worth billions of dollars, HHS said.

The pharmaceutical company will be donating 2.4 million bottles of the HIV prevention drug Truvada, which it manufactures, to 200,000 uninsured individuals each year for 11 years. A less expensive generic version of the drug is expected next year.

HIV researcher Dr Rochelle Walensky told the New York Times: "The real cost of Truvada is about $60 a year".

Roma 2-0 Juventus: Hosts win to boost Champions League hopes
Team-mates had to step between the pair to prevent them from coming to blows as Florenzi then hurled several insults in the direction of Ronaldo .

The decision was nonetheless celebrated by the Trump administration. "Will help us achieve our goal of ending the HIV epidemic in America!"

"The majority of Americans who are at risk and who could protect themselves with PrEP are still not receiving the medication".

As we head into the weekend, a bit of intriguing news from the biotech world-drug giant Gilead will be donating hundreds of thousands of doses of HIV prevention drugs as part of a deal reached with the Trump administration.

The Trump administration announced on Twitter that health officials have worked with the biotechnology company Gilead, which developed the drug Truvada or PrEP (pre-exposure prophalaxis), to secure a donation of the medication, CNN reports.

The drug maker believes the Truvada donation, combined with efforts to curb the root causes of HIV, such as homophobia, racism, stigma, transphobia, and violence against women, can lead to the end of disease transmission in the United States.
