NY mayor threatens to fine Trump Organization over pollution

Bill de Blasio holds a press conference inside Trump Tower

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio staged a chaotic news conference in the lobby of Trump Tower on Monday in which he touted a city anti-pollution law, was heckled by President Donald Trump's supporters and said he will announce this week whether he's running for president. Your polluting buildings are part of the problem. He said the decision to hold a rally in the lobby of Trump Tower was independent of any presidential ambitions and he promised to name other potential violators publicly in the future.

Waving and holding signs reading "Trump 2020", "Failed Mayor", "LGBT for Trump" and "Worst Mayor Ever", the protesters rode up and down the escalators, over and over again, providing some enthusiastic counterprogramming as de Blasio delivered his remarks. "If you don't do it by 2030 there will be serious fines, as high as $1 million or more for the biggest buildings". Clearly, they are uncomfortable with the truth, ' he said.

Some Trump supporters joined the protesters who booed and yelled, "You suck!" as the mayor tried to talk over the noise.

In April, New York City passed the Climate Mobilization Act, a package of 10 bills aimed at keeping the city compliant with carbon reduction goals outlined in the Paris accord.

De Blasio, a Democrat who won a second term as mayor in 2017, has been openly mulling a presidential bid. This means the Trump Organization is on track to be hit with fines of $2.1 mllion every year from 2030, unless its buildings are made more environmentally friendly.

Eight of Trump's buildings in the city fail to meet the 2030 emissions standards, releasing about 27,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases each year, or the amount produced by 5,800 cars, de Blasio's office said.

Uber drivers won't talk to you - if you pay the premium
Uber's Uber Black and Uber Black SUV brands are getting some new features that focus on improving the rider experience. Some drivers may give riders a lower score if they aren't polite or don't talk enough.

City officials said the president's eight largest NY properties pump out around 27,000 tons of planet-warming gases every ear.

"Cut your emissions or we will take what you really care about", de Blasio said. "Cut your emissions or pay the price". "With flames on our hillsides and floods in our streets, cities can not wait another moment to confront the climate crisis with everything we've got".

What did de Blasio say?

NY has positioned itself as a bulwark against Trump administration attempts to dismantle action to address climate change.

The president's son Eric Trump, who is helping to run the Trump Organization during his father's presidency, responded to de Blasio in a tweet late Monday afternoon. The plan will ban new glass buildings deemed "inefficient" and strive for carbon neutrality by 2050.
