Plastic Waste Found At The Bottom Of Mariana Trench

Explorer reaches deepest spot on Earth in historic dive

Vescovo's expedition into the Mariana Trench also marks his fourth ocean bottom visit, with a fifth to go - the Molly Deep in the Arctic Ocean, the shallowest of the five at a mere 5,669 metres. He spent four hours exploring the deepest known area of the planet's seabed in a $48 million submersible - a small watercraft built to withstand the extreme pressure of the deep waters. Previously, the deepest dive measured over 10,912 metres and was carried out by US navy lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard in 1960.

Mr Vescovo also saw angular metal or plastic objects, one with writing on it.

An American diver set a new record for the deepest dive in history last month when he plunged almost 36,000 feet.

Once he's conquered the mountains and oceans, Vescovo says his next challenge is space. The sea-life they found will be tested for microsplastics, which is an ever growing issue for our oceans and the organisms living in them. Four expeditions made in the last three weeks to the Mariana Trench in the submarine, DSV Limiting Factor has collected biological and rock samples. On May 3, the Limiting Factor submersible freed and recovered a Five Deeps Expedition scientific lander that had got stuck at the bottom of Challenger Deep in a previous dive.

Mr Vescovo said: "It is nearly indescribable how excited all of us are about achieving what we just did".

Huawei says Trump's ban is in no one's interest
If Huawei "can't get the widget or the part or the software update to keep functioning, then those systems go down", he said. Huawei , which has repeatedly denied such allegations, did not immediately comment on the executive order.

"It was very disappointing to see obvious human contamination of the deepest point in the ocean", Vescovo said. More worrisome was that Vescovo reported coming across a plastic bag and candy wrappers.

Titanic director James Cameron repeated the feat in 2012. It's not the first time plastic has been found at the bottom of the sea, but it's a reminder of the scale of the problem. The first expedition to reach the bottom was undertaken in 1960 by Lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss scientist Jacques Piccard in the Trieste, a US Navy deep-diving research bathyscape.

After the Five Deeps expedition is complete later this year, the plan is to pass the submersible onto science institutions so researchers can continue to use it.

Before now, the Five Deeps Expedition surveyed the Puerto Rico Trench in the Atlantic Ocean, and the South Sandwich and Java Trenches in the Indian Ocean.

Taking the hours-long journey to what is believed to be the deepest point mankind has visited in any ocean was a complicated one, and for Victor Vescovo, it meant being constantly on the alert as he monitored his state-of-the-art vessel.
