Tech giant Google on Friday said the company is looking forward to working with India's anti-trust regulator the Competition Commission of India (CCI) on issues related to the Android mobile operating system. The CCI had reportedly found a lead in the allegations against Google and ordered a full investigation into the company using Android's dominant position in the market to create an unfavourable atmosphere for its rivals.
According toReuters, in February past year CCI started looking into the complaint, which is similar to one Google faced in Europe that resulted in a 4.34 billion euro ($5 billion) fine on the company.
CCI is digging into these charges against Google since February this year and according to a Reuters report, the commission chose to begin a formal investigation in April.
The investigation, which is expected to last about a year, will require the presence of Google executives to appear at different times before the end of the year, the source told Reuters.
In the EU's probe, it was found that Google forcefully bundled its apps like Chrome browser and Google Search into Android devices, which is unfair to other app developers.
In the European Union case, regulators said Google forced manufacturers to pre-install Google Search and its Chrome browser, together with its Google Play app store, on Android devices, giving it an unfair advantage. Last year, Google was fined 1.36 billion rupees by the CCI (equivalent to $19.46 million USD) for what was called "search bias" and abuse of its dominant position.
"Android has enabled millions of Indians to connect to the Internet by making mobile devices more affordable", a Google spokesperson said in a statement shared with IANS. The European Commission looked at Google's Search, Android, and online ads practices and found that Google abused its position in the market. Google would also have paid phone makers to ensure that they would install the Google Search app. In each case, Google had to make several concessions regarding Android. "Voluntary change in conduct may have an impact on the quantum of penalty, if it's imposed", said Shahi.
