Record 19.3 Mln Americans Watched Final Game of Thrones Episode

Game of Thrones has paid dividends for Foxtel with the finale attracting the subscription TV operator's largest ever audience for a single show.

The finale of Game of Thrones cemented the fantasy epic's status as the most watched television series in HBO history.

The Game of Thrones, based on "A Song of Ice and Fire" series of fantasy novels by George Martin, focuses on the deep political crisis on the conflict-mired Westeros continent, which erupted after the fall of the Targaryen dynasty that previously ruled there for centuries. The audience was 21% higher on 2017's season seven finale and 6% better than the previous record holder, episode 3 of the current series which had 1.011 million viewers.

Game of Thrones' wrapped up its eight series run overnight, ending what has arguably been one of the most internationally viewed programs in a decade.

HBO in a statement issued to AFP said, "Season 8 of Game of Thrones is averaging 44.2 million viewers per episode in the gross audience, an increase of more than 10 million viewers when compared to season 7". That beats the previous record held by the Season 4 premiere of The Sopranos, which won 13.4 million viewers when it aired back in 2002.
