Trump to Ban US Firms From Using Foreign Tech Deemed ‘Security Risk’

Huawei says willing to sign 'no-spy' agreements

"We are willing to sign no-spy agreements with governments, including the United Kingdom government, to commit ourselves to making our equipment meet the no-spy, no-backdoors standard", Huawei chairman Liang Hua told reporters in London via an interpreter.

The new order, if enacted, won't change much for big wireless carriers, which aren't using Huawei equipment, Reuters says.

The order is expected to invoke the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, a federal law that authorizes the president to regulate commerce after declaring a national emergency in response to an extraordinary threat to the US.

If signed, the executive order would come at a delicate time in relations between China and the United States as the world's two largest economies ratchet up tariffs in a battle over what US officials call China's unfair trade practices.

The statement comes after news leaked this month that Huawei equipment would be used in 5G networks in the United Kingdom, creating tension between it and the U.S. The leaks resulted in Theresa May firing her defense minister Gavin Williamson, despite Williamson denying leaking anything.

And while the order reportedly won't name any specific countries and companies, it's tailored towards Huawei, which the USA government deems to be a spy threat (and which Huawei has vehemently denied).

HTC Exodus 1s Places Blockchain On A Tight Budget
Though the specification hasn't yet been released for the device, the retail price is touted to be between $250 and $300. Moreover, it will ship with an extra SD card, in order to better support the phone's blockchain capabilities.

The White House and Commerce Department declined to comment. "We urge the U.S.to stop citing security concerns as an excuse to unreasonably suppress Chinese companies and provide a fair and equitable and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese companies to operate in the U.S".

The issue has taken on new urgency as US wireless carriers look for partners as they rollout 5G networks.

The U.S. has been trying without success to persuade other governments to exclude to exclude equipment made by Huawei from super-fast 5G mobile networks that will connect billions of devices.

At a hearing Tuesday, U.S. senators raised the alarm about allies using Chinese equipment in 5G networks.
