A small plane involved in upgrading a runway at Dubai International Airport crashed Thursday night, killing four people and halting traffic at the world's busiest airport for international travel for almost an hour.
Thursday night's crash also killed three Britons, with the victims comprising the pilot, co-pilot and two passengers who were aboard the four-seater, UK-registered DA42 plane owned by Flight Calibration Services, based at Shoreham Airport in West Sussex, the BBC reported.
Meanwhile, the Dubai Media Office added that the plane belonged to multinational conglomerate Honeywell, and "crashed due to a technical malfunction".
The aircraft was on a mission to calibrate terrestrial navigation systems at the airport, the statement said.
The airport, home to long-haul carrier Emirates, is the world's busiest for worldwide travel.
Dubai International Airport later told The Associated Press that the plane "was being used to calibrate the approach systems" at the airport. "The relevant teams are on the scene", Dubai Media Office said.
The company refused to comment on reports that it was contracted to do runway work at Dubai International Airport.
"Dubai Airports can confirm that operations at @DXB were suspended from 19:36 to 20:22 UAE local time due to an incident involving a small non-commercial aircraft in the vicinity of the airport", the airport said on Twitter. "The plane was not owned or operated by Honeywell but by a third party engaged by Honeywell". We are waiting for more details'. An investigation team from the GCAA arrived at the scene of the crash and will continue the investigation, the GCAA said.
