Villa's Jed Steer stares down Mason Holgate before penalty save

Jim Lynskey with former Albion captain Darren Fletcher

Hughton was sacked by Brighton on Monday but will meet with West Brom officials, following the club's defeat to Aston Villa in the Championship play-off semi-final.

Villa, relegated in 2016, will hope to avoid a repeat of previous year when they lost to Fulham in the playoff final.

Villa came into the second leg of their semi-final tie leading 2-1.

Villa laid siege to the West Brom goal in the extra 30 minutes and could have had a late penalty for handball but the 10-man hosts held firm to take it to penalties.

West Brom won 1-0 on the night at the Hawthorns to level the tie at 2-2 on aggregate thanks to Craig Dawson's first half header.

Iran: Suspect sentenced to 10 years for spying for Britain
Iran is already holding British-Iranian national Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who is in jail in Tehran for alleged sedition. British council employee Aras Amiri, a 32-year-old Iranian national, was arrested in March last year in Iran.

Villa will now face either Leeds United or Derby County in the Championship playoff final for a place in the Premier League next season.

A nerve-racking penalty shoot-out ensued, with Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer proving the hero - making two straight saves from the spot before Tammy Abraham netted the decisive spot-kick.

After the game, Aston Villa manager Dean Smith said of Steer: "It's unbelievable what can happen as Jed was at Charlton on loan earlier this year and now he's a hero for us".

Manchester City and Liverpool have proved themselves to be miles ahead of the rest of the Premier League over the course of the 2018/19 Premier League season, and Sky Sports pundit Keith Andrews has said they are the only two top tier sides that would not start Jack Grealish.
