David Ortiz may have been targeted by crooked cop hit man

David Ortiz

A plane carrying David Ortiz landed in Boston on Monday night, a day after the Red Sox icon was shot at a club in his native Dominican Republic and underwent emergency surgery.

Ortiz reportedly is in stable condition following a lengthy surgery late Sunday night, and the Red Sox are working to transport him to Boston for further treatment, per a report.

"On behalf of me and my family, I want to thank John and Linda Henry, Tom Werner, Sam Kennedy and the Boston Red Sox for all that they are doing for David and our family, as well as Dr. Larry Ronan and the awesome staff at Massachusetts General Hospital". Ortiz remains in intensive care and will be closely monitored for the next 24 to 48 hours.

Ortiz ended his 20-year big league career in 2016, when he earned the last of his 10 All-Star appearances. Authorities originally said Garcia was the shooter, but revised that statement to say he was actually the driver of the motorcycle; the shooter remains at large, police said.

One suspect, 25-year-old Eddy Feliz Garcia, entered police custody after a crowd beat and injured him following the shooting.

Russian newspapers in front-page protest at reporter Ivan Golunov's arrest
Dozens of journalists from state news agencies signed an open letter calling for the charges against him to be dismissed. The Kremlin admitted on Monday that mistakes had possibly been made in the handling of the case.

The Red Sox retired his number, 34, in 2017, and Boston renamed a bridge and a stretch of road outside Fenway Park in his honor.

Dr. Abel Gonzalez, who performed the surgery, said part of Ortiz's intestines and liver were removed. López was shot in the leg, and his injuries were not life-threatening, said his wife, Liza Blanco, who is also a TV host. "That collaboration with Dominican journalists, and well as Enrique's close relationship with David's father, Leo Ortiz, has been essential to our reporting".

There were few bigger personalities in the game when Ortiz was in his prime, and perhaps nobody more beloved.

"They talk about superheroes without capes and he's a superhero without a cape", Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who a former teammate of Ortiz's in Boston, said during a pregame news conference.

"I'm so disappointed to know that someone like David, who has saved so many lives, can have someone after his life", Martinez said, before being overcome with emotion. "Because just one coward out there that wanted to do that to someone that didn't deserve it".
