Federal agency says Kellyanne Conway should be fired from White House

Kellyanne Conway speaks to reporters at the White House in Washington

A federal watchdog agency recommended that US President Donald Trump fire one of his most ardent defenders, counsellor Kellyanne Conway, for repeatedly violating a law that limits political activity by government workers.

"Ms. Conway's advocacy against the Democratic candidates and open endorsement of the president's reelection effort during both official media appearances and on her Twitter account constitute prohibited political activity under the Hatch Act", the report stated.

The White House has responded to another attack from "Deep State" bureaucrats entrenched in the Washington establishment, telling the Office of Special Counsel to follow its own mandate to be "impartial".

Steven Groves, the White House deputy press secretary, dismissed the OSC's findings as "deeply flawed", before suggesting that Hatch Act restrictions violate Conway's free-speech rights.

In March of a year ago, the OSC found Conway in violation of the Hatch Act when she promoted then-U.S. Senate hopeful Roy Moore's Alabama special election campaign.

The special counsel's report bears no relation to the work of Robert Mueller, who was specifically appointed in a separate capacity pertaining to the Trump-Russia investigation relating to Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

"Like with other presidential appointees, the President has the authority to discipline Ms. Conway for violating the Hatch Act".

President Donald Trump has praised Conway for her "success" in her career.

In that interview, Conway also addressed those who said she was being too political.

The official response from the White House came in the form of a letter to Kerner from White House Counsel Pat Cipollone.

"Given that Ms. Conway is a repeat offender and has shown disregard for the law, OSC recommends that she be removed from federal service", for comments made in television interviews and social media posts, the office said in a statement.

Others sanctioned by the Office of Special Counsel for political messages include former interior secretary Ryan Zinke; Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's spokeswoman; Dan Scavino, former White House social media director; and Nikki Haley, former US ambassador to the United Nations.

Liberal Senator Bernie Sanders, a 2020 candidate whose ideas Conway has publicly described as "terrible for America", supported the OSC's call for her removal. The motivations included pressure to address media inquiries about Conway's remarks on May 29 and "the need to be mindful of interest from politicians outside the office".

"Never has OSC had to issue multiple reports to the President concerning Hatch Act violations by the same individual", Kerner wrote. She pointed to the door and said 'can you leave, please?' Later, I asked her again, and she said: 'I have no reaction. The office that enforces it is now recommending she be removed from federal employment. "Let me know when the jail sentence starts". No problem sir. Others say, sir, do you think I could take a pass please, I beg you please.
