Foxconn will move iPhone production out of China if necessary

Apple has sufficient iPhone production capacity outside China to meet the needs of the US market. Angela Lang CNET

Its semiconductor division chief Young Liu said that 25% of the production capacity is positioned outside of China and the company is ready to help Apple since it has enough capacity to meet the demand of the U.S. market.

The move at the world's largest contract manufacturer also comes after Gou told Reuters in April that he planned to step down from Foxconn to pave the way for younger talent to move up the ranks.

The trade war between the United States and China is far from the end.

The trade war between the United States and China could bring more pain to Apple with the USA president threatening Beijing with imposing new tariffs on about $300 billion worth of Chinese goods, including Foxconn-built iPhones and iPads.

Although Foxconn's biggest presence is within China, the company also has operations in Brazil, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, South Korea, within Europe, and the U.S. With this in mind, Liu points out that, "Twenty-five percent of our production capacity is outside of China and we can help Apple respond to its needs in the U.S. market".

Apple Inc. has a backup plan if the U.S. Foxconn assures that it can fully support Apple if the ongoing trade war goes unpredictable.

The committee includes most members from Foxconn's proposed new board, including Foxconn CFO Huang Chiu-lien and Foxconn Interconnect Technology Ltd Chairman Lu Sung-Ching.

Two people with direct knowledge of the matter said Tai had resigned from the committee to avoid possible conflict of interest between parent Foxconn and its Japanese unit.

Foxconn did not provide a reason for their absence on the committee.

Most of Foxconn's factories are located in China, even though the company is headquartered in Taiwan, but in recent years, the tech giant has been making great efforts to expand and diversify its worldwide operations, from Brazil to Turkey, India, and the US. On Tuesday, executives reaffirmed that employment goal, saying construction remained on schedule and that it will hire as many as 2,000 Americans by the end of 2020. They closed up 0.4%, in line with the broader index.
