Jupiter, its largest moons, will be visible with binoculars Monday night

Jupiter will come so close to Earth this month you can see its largest moons with binoculars

NASA has a message for space lovers this month: Look up.

Although opposition occurs on a specific date, the entire month will provide you with a good opportunity to observe the planet.

Jupiter, the mighty "king" of the planets in our solar system, is regularly visible for those who know where and when to look for it, but next week will be a particularly special time for anyone who wants to catch a glimpse of the gas giant.

With Jupiter and Earth reaching their closest point near the end of June, the largest planet in our solar system will not only be visible to the naked eye, but with binoculars or a small telescope, you'll also be able to spot several of its moons. It will appear bright to the naked eye in the night sky and will approach closest to Earth in mid-June.

The American space agency has said that Jupiter "is at its biggest and brightest this month", and can be observed with a pair of binoculars or telescope.

When is the best time to see Jupiter?

NASA has been studying Jupiter closely for three years with the Juno (Junona) spacecraft. This means Jupiter is fairly close to Earth and you can spot it lurking in the sky all night long.

If you happen to get your hands on some vision enhancing equipment, you might even be able to make out Jupiter's largest moons, Europa, Ganymede, Io and Callisto, which were first spotted by Galileo Galilei in the early 17th century.
