Norway too strong for Nigeria

FIFA Women's World Cup Wrap 08 June 2019

After the Nigeria Football Federation cleared all their outstanding entitlements, the Super Falcons say they are in the mood and spirit to take all three points off the Grasshoppers of Norway in their first match of the 8th FIFA Women's World Cup finals in Reims tomorrow.

The biggest story on day two of the 2019 Women's World Cup of Soccer did not appear to be about the star players who were playing, but about the star player on Norway who wasn't.

Just as the Nigerian side were beginning to settle down, Lisa-Marie Utland doubled their advantage through the hands of Tochukwu Oluehi into the roof of the net from a close range in the 33rd minute.

Six minutes later, Osinachi Ohale poked the ball into her own net from a cross.

They are without Ada Hegerberg, the first Women's Ballon d'Or victor, who has refused to play for the national side since 2017 after taking a stand against what she describes as a lack of respect for female players in the country.

Faith Michael's faint touch was enough to put the ball out of Utland's reach before the Nigeria defender collided with her goalkeeper and was taken from the pitch on a stretcher.

Tit-for-tat: China ready to respond if U.S. escalates trade war
Washington has put Huawei on a blacklist that effectively bars US firms from selling to the company without government approval. They don't want to exactly say that, so they go out and try to buy the companies.

The tournament got underway on Friday, with hosts France thrashing South Korea 4-0 in Paris.

The Swede who led the team to their ninth African title at Ghana last November said every game was now going to matter.

Since the appointment of Thomas Dennerby as the national women's teams coach, the Swede has tried to instill some order in the attack and tried to make the players work together while still trying to maintain the verve and pace of the forward line. We have to fight for 180 minutes more, plus added time.

The last Norway's match was against China.

Nigeria have conceded more goals than any other nation in Women's World Cup history (59) - with 19% of those goals conceded against Norway (11 of 59).

The game petered out late on, with Norway only having one shot on target in the second half.
