Rickie Fowler happy with U.S. Open start

The USGA lost control of the course on day three last year when Phil Mickelson was penalised for hitting a moving ball

The U.S. Open is supposed to be the most hard test among the sport's four majors, and the one that challenges a player's complete game the most.

The world number three has carded opening rounds in the 60s in all four of his major victories, going on to win the 2011 US Open by eight strokes at Congressional, but the last of those wins came five years ago.

Justin Rose rode a red-hot putter to an opening round of six-under-par 65 and a one-shot lead at the U.S Open on Thursday while Tiger Woods and two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka turned in scrappy efforts to stay in contention.

Scott Piercy: By missing the cut at last week's Canadian Open, Piercy risked his spot at the U.S. Open.

"Careful what you wish for, because I think we're going to see it come the weekend", McDowell said.

For one day, Pebble Beach was paradise. It seemed like the majority of the guys were under par through the first seven holes, and then nobody was making hay after that.

Englishman Hatton, who recorded his best finish at a US Open when he finished joint sixth previous year, climbed to four under par without dropping a shot in his first 15 holes, but finished with three successive bogeys.

Crude oil rallies in late-day surge, settles almost 2% higher

Woods, who claimed his 15th major title at the Masters in April, said most of his misses were in the correct spot to limit damage, just as most of his 25 putts were uphill - key to success on the sometimes bumpy poa annua greens at Pebble Beach. Woods, who went off late in the day and helped close out the afternoon wave as the sun splashed against maybe the prettiest backdrop in all of American golf, hit the ball quite poorly but putted his way to a 1-under 70 in Round 1.

In a gentle start to the toughest test in golf, Rose had a one-shot lead on a day so accommodating that more than three dozen players broke par. For this U.S. Open, in these relatively soft conditions, 39 players broke par. Even so, he had few complaints about his 69 to begin his bid for a record-tying third straight U.S. Open.

What: 2019 U.S. Open.

"Pebble Beach, you have the first seven to get it going, and after that it's a fight", Woods said.

After holing his second shot from just under 100 yards at the par-four 11th, his second hole at Pebble Beach, Oosthuizen raised his arms in triumph and broke into a broad smile before high-fiving his caddie.

Phil Mickelson, who's trying to complete a career Grand Slam, had a round of missed opportunities, which included a lipped-out 1-foot par putt, and finished with a 1-over 72. "I know I've done some stupid things in the past, but that would have been right up there". "And I'm playing well enough to do it".
