Severe rainfall warning as cyclone develops in Arabian Sea

A deep depression formed over the Arabian Sea on Monday afternoon is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Kerala, coastal and south interior Karnataka, Konkan region, Goa and the Lakshadweep islands on June 13 morning, the India Meteorological Department said Tuesday.

"10 Chinese vessels seek shelter at the Ratnagiri port (in Maharashtra) to avoid being hit by the fury of Cyclone Vayu".

Anticipating the impact of Cyclone Vayu, schools and colleges have declared a holiday on June 13, the day the cyclone will hit Gujarat.

Several coastal districts in the Saurashtra region were likely to witness heavy to very heavy rains, heralding pre-monsoon showers, according to MeT officials.

Adding to it, the IMD has issued an Orange alert for Cyclone Vayu. Ports are also directed to flag a danger signal.

It was centred over the Eastcentral Arabian Sea, about 460 km north-northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep), 540 km southsouthwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra) and 690 km almost south of Veraval (Gujarat) during the early morning hours.

"A heavy rain warning has been issued for Saurashtra and Kutch on June 13 and 14 due to the depression in the Arabian Sea which will turn into a severe cyclonic storm", state meteorological department director Jayanta Sarkar told reporters in Ahmedabad.

The state has been put on alert following the IMD prediction. The government is also likely to keep the Army, the Navy and the Coast Guard on standby, as per PTI reports. The state government has chose to deploy 15 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch from June 11 morning. Gujarat CM Shri Vijay Rupani is personally monitoring the situation.

"In the meeting with the state government authorities, all possible safety and preventive measures were duscussed, including the deployment of NDRF, SDRF and Army personnel", said Sarkar who was part of the meeting. It is likely to increase to 65-75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph over north and south Gujarat coast on June 13 and 14.

The state has been reeling under soaring mercury levels for several weeks where the maximum temperature was around 43-44 degrees Celsius at several locations.
