Suspected New Zealand mosque shooter pleads not guilty

Brenton Tarrant the man charged in relation to the mosque shootings in Christchurch in the dock at Christchurch District Court for his first appearance on 16 March

Earlier today, the man accused of the Christchurch mosque attacks pleaded not guilty to all 92 charges laid against him - including murder, attempted murder and a terrorism charge at the High Court in Christchurch.

Previously charged with 50 counts of murder and 39 of attempted murder, Tarrant faced an amended charge of murder Friday following the death of Turkish national Zekeriya Tuyan, 46, on May 2, two additional charges of attempted murder and a charge of engaging in a terrorist act under the Terrorism Suppression Act of 2002, developed in the global fallout after the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Tarrant appeared in the court via video link from the maximum-security prison where he has been held since March.

His smiling demeanour enraged survivors still reeling from the worst massacre in modern New Zealand history, who had packed the courthouse's public gallery for a glimpse of the accused.

Judge Cameron Mander said that two mental-health assessments of Tarrant - standard procedure in murder cases - had been completed, and there were no issues in relation to his ability to enter pleas and stand trial.

"It just shows he's an animal", Mustafa Boztas, who was wounded in the thigh, told AFP outside the court.

Tarrant first appeared in Christchurch District Court the day after the mosque attacks on 15 March, where he was charged with multiple counts of murder.

Outside the courtroom, a man reportedly speaking in support of white supremacy was escorted away by police, according to The Associated Press.

The Judge said on Friday there were no issues arising from mental health assessments and that the defendant is fit to stand trial. "We are not happy", he said.

The 28-year-old Australian man is accused in the March 15 shooting rampage at two mosques in Christchurch. "But when I saw the terrorist, he was just, he's nothing".

Lichfield Street is expected to play host to the crowds again in August, when the accused will appear for a case review hearing. Pretending that he's innocent and nothing is wrong. The attack was live-streamed from a head-mounted camera.

Tarrant allegedly opened fire in the packed Al Noor mosque during Friday prayers, then travelled across town to continue the carnage in the suburban Linwood mosque, while livestreaming his actions on social media.

The attacks left 51 people dead, including several children.
