Theresa May announces net zero emissions goal for 2050

Oil companies are under increasing pressure to move away from fossil fuels as world demand and emissions continue to climb

This country led the world in innovation during the Industrial Revolution, and now we must lead the world to a clear, greener form of growth.

However the government has moved to confirm that a review will be conducted within five years of the target being set to confirm that other nations are taking similarly ambitious actions in a bid to ensure United Kingdom industries do not face "unfair competition".

Mrs May said: "As the first country to legislate for long-term climate targets, we can be truly proud of our record in tackling climate change". The country will also continue to work with its worldwide partners to tackle climate change, including through the British bid to host COP26 in 2020.

A report from the independent Committee on Climate Change recommended wholesale changes to the way the United Kingdom generates, distributes and uses power. That was agreed by MPs under the Climate Change Act in 2008, but will now be amended to the new, much tougher, goal. According to the CCC, extensive electrification, particularly of transport and heating, and a more ambitious offshore wind capacity goal of 75 GW by 2050 would be important pieces of the net-zero puzzle.

The Climate Change Act 2008 committed the United Kingdom to reduce net emissions by 80% from 1990 levels by 2050.

"Almost 400,000 people are already employed in the low-carbon sector and its supply chains across the country". Low carbon technology and clean energy contribute £44.5 billion to our economy every year.

Audi e-tron recalled for poor battery seal
It is unclear if the campaign will delay further deliveries, as the fix is not expected to become available until August. However, not many customers will be affected by it as only 540 of the 1,644 units sold have been delivered to customers.

The committee published its recommendations for the government in May this year, suggesting the country introduces a ban on new petrol and diesel cars sales from 2035.

Prime Minister Theresa May said legislation to wipe out the UK's net contribution to rising global temperatures will be put to members of Parliament, endorsing a report from advisers that shows what a carbon-neutral future would have to look like.

Urgency is building around efforts to contain an increase in global temperatures.

The announcement has been welcomed by businesses and academics and others across British society. "The technology and approaches that will deliver net zero are now understood, which is crucial, but will need strong policy leadership to ensure they are implemented".

"It will also consider the implications for our United Kingdom competitiveness". "The Institution of Engineering and Technology is fully committed to these goals and will do everything it can to assist government, industry and the profession to understand these challenges and work together to progress and implement the solutions to make the United Kingdom carbon free by 2050". This legislation must be followed by a commitment to long-term policies that support decarbonisation across the economy.

"And while we retain the ability in the [Climate Change] Act to use worldwide carbon credits that contribute to actions in other countries, we want them to take their own actions and we do not intend to use them". As the birthplace of the industrial revolution, it is right that the United Kingdom is the world's first major economy to commit to completely end its contribution to climate change, but trying to shift the burden to developing nations through International Carbon Credits undermines that commitment. With the pace of change we need to remember that our education system will need to evolve to train - and retrain - engineers so that they can thrive in this new world.
