Trudeau: Canada to push bans and plastic EPR

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau smiles against a nature scene

Proposed laws around single-use plastics could change the way Canadians eat and drink on the go, but the federal government says they are necessary to counter plastic pollution.

It would also develop national standards for extended producer responsibility (EPR) in co-operation with the provinces to transfer the cost and responsibility for collecting and recycling plastic from municipalities to the companies that create it.

According to a press release from Trudeau, a member of the Liberal Party of Canada, the federal government will ban items such as plastic bags, straws, cutlery, plates and stir sticks as early as 2021.

The unsatisfactory answer from the PM came after his government announced plans to ban many single-use plastics.

Trudeau said it is "tough" trying to explain the problem to his own children.

"Canadians know first hand the impacts of plastic pollution, and are exhausted of seeing their beaches, parks, streets, and shorelines littered with plastic waste", Trudeau said.

In your opinion, Is the Canadian Government taking this step in the right direction to help save the environment?

But they called on the government to follow the science.

"It would be irresponsible to put such a sweeping measure into place without fully studying the possible impacts on Canada's small businesses first", said Kelly.

"If it is banned, we are going to learn" how to deal with it, "for future generations", said Evelyn, another resident.

Trudeau said: "Canadians know first-hand the impacts of plastic pollution and are exhausted of seeing their beaches, parks, streets, and shorelines littered with plastic waste".

Both plastic manufacturers and the companies using their products, as in packing materials, will have to provide recycling plans.

The non-binding Ocean Plastics Charter called on participating countries and the European Union to commit to making all plastics reusable, recyclable or recovered by 2030.

Single-use plastic bags and other plastics and litter collect up against a hedge in Toronto.

"Our fundamental belief is that globally, plastics will continue to grow and that we'll need multiple plants to be built year over year to enable that growth", he said in an interview.

"Every year, Canadians throw away over three million tons of plastic waste", he said in a statement. This represents up to C$ 8 billion per year in lost value and wastes valuable resources and energy.

"Canadians know first-hand the impacts of plastic pollution, and are exhausted of seeing their beaches, parks, streets and shorelines littered with plastic waste", Trudeau stated.

"Plastic pollution is a growing threat in Canada and around the world, and we can not afford to ignore it", said Toronto-Danforth MP Julie Dabrusin, who delivered the opening statement at Monday's announcement.
