Trump contradicts NASA moon landing plans: 'We did that 50 years ago'

Donald Trump

United States President Donald Trump on Friday said that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration should focus on Mars instead of planning to send missions to the moon.

At least that's what he meant to say.

Trump wrote that the moon is a part of Mars, which may reference NASA's view of the moon as a jumping-off point for deeper human space exploration, but that's just speculation.

In an article dryly datelined as being written "On Earth (of which NY is a part)", The Guardian suggested that Trump's tweet may have been "a comment on Nasa's broader plan to eventually travel to Mars from the moon". But his off-the-cuff advice to stop talking about the moon may make things a little tricky for the witnesses at next Tuesday's congressional hearing on space science - and for Bridenstine and other NASA officials who are trying to build support for Artemis among congressional skeptics.

In a tweet, Trump criticized NASA for focusing its efforts on another lunar visit.

CNN's Brian Stelter noted Trump has been focused on going back to the moon for some time.

President Donald Trump gives thumbs up before departing Shannon Airport Ireland. "We'll be going to Mars very soon".

1969 was when Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon and now by 2024, NASA is planning to return to the moon.

"We can return American citizens astronauts to the moon, no longer easiest to head away in the aid of footprints and flags however to manufacture the muse we desire to ship American citizens to Mars and beyond", Pence acknowledged on the October 2017 inaugural meeting of the council, which Trump revived.

EST said NASA is "refocusing on the moon, the next sort of quest, if you will, but didn't we do this moon thing quite a few decades ago?" according to a clip shared by a senior fellow with the liberal watchdog Media Matters for America. Bridenstine seems to be interpreting Trump's message as a push to focus on the moon as a stepping stone for reaching Mars.

Although Mars, indeed, has its own moons - two, to be exact (named Phobos and Deimos) - the moon, which orbits Earth, is not a part of the Red Planet.
