USA women's side slammed for too much celebrating in 13-0 rout

USA Fans enjoy the pre match atmosphere prior to the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup France group F match between USA and Thailand

Alex Morgan pulled out a Steph Curry move after scoring her fourth goal against Thailand on Tuesday. While the match was never expected to be close, the defending champs showed no mercy in a dominant 13-0 win.

Former U.S. national soccer player Heather O'Reilly says the American women are ready to make their mark on this year's World Cup tournament and hopefully bring home back-to-back trophies.

The United States beat Thailand 13-0 in their Group F game at the Women's World Cup in France. The Americans led 3-0 at the break and then broke the match open in the second half, with the players celebrating goal after goal.

"Honestly, you're going up against a side that is the first time in the World Cup, they're just happy to be there..."

The 13 goals the USA scored are the most by any team so far in the World Cup. Thailand had no answer for what the No. 1 ranked team in the world brought to the table, and they were a bit fortunate not to lose by more.

Morgan got three more to equal the record of Akers set in that game against Taiwan in 1991, while Rapinoe, Pugh and Lloyd joined in too as spectators struggled to keep up with the scoring.

One of those players was Miranda Nild, and American-born Thailand forward who plays at Morgan's alma mater, the University of California, Berkeley.

It was also Morgan's first-ever World Cup hat trick.

"They were disappointed of course, they meant to make an impression in this first match and they were disappointed", coach Nuengrutai Srathongvian said through a translator. "It will be an incredibly hard World Cup", she said. "But we also feel like we've got more to do". "Yes, they are all athletes and they will be resilient".

The World Cup comes at a time that female players across the globe are seeking better treatment and pay. For comparison, the US had 39 attempts.

Up next for the United States is World Cup newcomer Chile on Sunday in Paris.

After netting four times in six minutes shortly after the restart, they then added six more goals in the last 16 minutes.

In the last meeting between the teams, Sweden ousted the United States in the quarterfinals at the 2016 Olympics. Afterward, former USA goalkeeper Hole Solo called Sweden "cowards" for bunkering on defence.

Sweden defeated Chile 2-0 earlier on Tuesday in Rennes, a match that featured a 40-minute weather delay.
