After Google+, Google is Working on Another Social Network

Google’s taking another crack at building a social network

After numerous high-profiles failures, including Google+, the search giant is (sort of) trying its hands again at social networking with its latest app called Shoelace. Google+ was officially dissolved in April this year and it looked like the company is done with building a social network in general.

Described by Google as an app that "helps connect people with shared interests through in-person activities", Shoelace is available only as a mobile app on Android (v.8.0 or newer) and iOS (v11.0 or higher) devices, but is only being offered to select users in the U.S. on an invite-only basis. Unlike most social networks, the core idea behind Shoelace seems to be focused on meeting new people in person, not necessarily just online.

The new social app is created by Area 120, which is Google's development laboratory.

VW, Ford broaden alliance to autonomous, electric vehicles
VW, meanwhile, has been working on MEB since 2016 and expects to build 15 million cars using the platform in the next decade. That's the automaker's in-house autonomous vehicle development unit, which now has 200 employees.

According to Android Police, Shoelace seems to have a lot in common with Schemer, another location-based social network that Google launched in 2011 and canned in 2014. Shoelace is a hyperlocal app for organizing events and activities, called "Loops", which makes it similar to Facebook Events. It is now available only to 'select communities' in New York City, and users must have an active Google account to sign in. According to the company, "While our goal is to bring Shoelace to cities nationwide, we've chose to focus our efforts on New York City at first". The match-making of Shoelace is based on the interests and picks. "After installing the app, we ask each user to join a community - which often require verification - to ensure you only attend Loops with people you might want to know", the team said in that same FAQ.

Aware that the app could raise privacy concerns among some users, Google has added several security features to Shoelace.

The site's still in the early stages, and is now operating on an invite-only basis, and is only partnering with select communities. Google is even taking requests for suggestions on places it should bring Shoelace to next.
