Amazon's Alexa will offer medical advice

Amazon's Alexa virtual assistants

Alexa will use medically verified information from the NHS to answer medical questions and provide guidance to its United Kingdom users.

It's created to help patients, especially the elderly, blind and those who can not access the internet through traditional means, to get professional, NHS-verified health information in seconds, through simple voice commands.

From this week, United Kingdom users who ask Alexa health-related questions - "Alexa, what are the symptoms of flu?" - will be provided with answers vetted by NHS health professionals.

The UK 's Department of Health (DoH) stated the transfer would reduce the pressure on NHS professionals within the country, giving customers a simple way to access authoritative medical recommendation.

Beyond that, though, the UK's NHS move is very interesting based on the current dynamics around the world when it comes to data privacy and security.

The move is meant to relieve pressure on NHS staff amid an overhaul of the service to become more digital.

In April, Amazon rolled out HIPAA-compliant skills for Alexa and announced the first six healthcare organizations, including Cigna and Atrium Health, now currently building voice skills that can securely transmit private patient health information.

These relevant and reasonable points being said, easy access to medical information might prove useful for those somewhat unable or resistant to seek immediate medical advice on a daily basis.

Mainland traders new target of HK protesters
Human Rights Council on suppression of rights and freedom in Hong Kong and called on it to eject China as a member. The demonstrators chanted demands in Mandarin, China's official language, for the Chinese traders to go home.

He said that he did not own an Alexa-enabled device "and I wouldn't want one", adding: 'I don't want one because I think there is an essential humanity that we have got to preserve.

However, The Times reported that Mr Hancock had dismissed the idea of using voice-assisted technology at an event last May when he was culture secretary.

The new partnership has been spearheaded by NHSX, an NHS body set up to bring digital technology to patients.

"Healthcare is made inaccessible when trust and privacy is stripped away, and that's what this bad plan would do".

Amazon has provided assurances that it won't target users for advertisement, or do any of those unscrupulous things that people are anxious about, but in an age where we tend not to trust corporate promises but instead regulate, this is likely to be big news for a while.

In the age of the European General Data Protection Rule, the United Kingdom allowing a USA company to hold this personal information seems disingenuous.

"The public need to be able to get reliable information about their health easily and in ways they actually use", said Matthew Gould, chief executive of NHSX.
