Amber Rudd U-turns on opposition to no-deal Brexit

Gibraltar News - GBC TV and Radio Gibraltar

Greg Clark urged Tory MPs to "strain every sinew to avoid" crashing out of the European Union under the next prime minister, with leadership rivals Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt both saying they would be prepared to leave the bloc on 31 October without a deal.

The polemical candidate is now trying to shut down the parliament, though some have warned him that such a move, which would force a no-deal Brexit, would tear down the government and even some may take legal actions against him.

Speaking on the BBC, former Prime Minister, Sir John Major, said the idea of bypassing Parliament was "utterly and totally unacceptable from any British parliamentarian or democrat".

But the men vying to succeed Theresa May face a battle to force through their commitment, as some MPs vow to block any attempt.

The news comes a day after Mr Hunt and Mr Johnson faced each other for a head-to-head debate on ITV.

"I think, somehow, Alex, much as I love the USA, much as it would be a dream job for me in many ways, I'm afraid I've got to stick around in case they drop the ball again". "You know if you become less efficient and your ability to trade is impeded then of course losing your competitiveness means that there will be jobs that will be lost".

A spokeswoman for Mrs May told a Westminster briefing: "The Prime Minister has always been clear that leaving without a deal would be disruptive".

Great to meet Members in Maidstone and Sevenoaks this evening.

Amber Rudd said she has "accepted" the possibility of a no-deal Brexit, despite having previously fiercely opposed it.

When asked about whether or not the Brexit campaign promise that Wales would "not be a penny worse off" would be honoured, current front-runner Boris Johnson said: "I can give that categorical reassurance that the shared prosperity fund will continue".

On Friday, the contenders head to Cheltenham for their latest hustings with the Tory members who are choosing their destiny.

The victor, and new Prime Minister, is expected to be announced on July 23.
