Apple's 2020 iPhone might reduce TrueDepth notch with smaller camera

Apple could give up on Face ID at some point in the near future

Noted analyst Ming Chi-Kuo - who has an excellent track record regarding Apple related news - has now revealed that the 2020 iPhones may feature in-screen TouchID. But Apple may have found ways to reduce the size of that notch without affecting 3D face recognition functionality. It goes on to say that a future iPhone might arrive with both the Face ID system AND the optical fingerprint reader. In 2021 the bite must disappear completely from the screen.

Last week, another report suggested that Apple would launch a new iPhone with an under-the-screen fingerprint scanner, but only in the Chinese market, as the technology would reportedly cost less than the components required for Face ID. With the Trump administration continuing to play hardball on the issue, Apple is reportedly looking to move between 15-30 percent of its iPhone production outside of China to hedge its risks going forward.

Such advancements would put the iPhone on a more level playing field with Android rivals like Samsung and OnePlus that have already been minimising the notch.

Further, Kuo predicts that Apple may also change the design of the handset.

Spanish court rules Julio Iglesias is father of 43-year old man
The singer's defence team argued that the trial should not take place since the case had already gone to court. The determination of this matter is not final and can be appealed before the Provincial Court of Valencia.

The analyst expects the iPhone in 2020 and 2021 a new design will get.

The new range of iPhones are expected to feature OLED displays with varying screen sizes of 5.4-inches, 6.1-inches and 6.7-inches. There have also been rumours of a China-specific model with Touch ID support.

It is possible that this China-specific model is the same iPhone Kuo mentioned with a smaller notch. This could be achieved by using a much smaller front camera lens for an enhanced screen to body ratio. Samsung, on the other hand, has used circular and pill-shaped front camera cutouts to avoid the notch.

Apple changed how phones were designed when it released the iPhone X in 2017 and introduced the world to the notched displays. Many felt that it hinders the smartphone experience and prevents an edge-to-edge display. However, such reports and rumors must be taken with a grain of salt. For now, it seems highly unlikely that Apple will do away with Face ID.
