At least 16 killed, 84 injured in Pakistan train crash

The collision took place because the passenger train was diverted onto the incorrect track at the station police said

At least 11 passengers were killed and 67 injured when a passenger train collided with a freight train near Rahim Yar Khan on Thursday.

At least 84 people were injured, with some in critical condition, according to physician Javed Ahmed.

The official said that apparently the accident happened when the signal went wrong on the track, leading the passenger train to go on to the loop line where the freight train was parked.

In a statement, he said he was saddened by the news.

A passenger train crashed into a stationary freight train in Pakistan on Thursday, killing 11 people and injuring more than 60 under overturned carriages, police said, with the prime minister blaming ageing, poorly maintained rail infrastructure.

He said a state of emergency has been declared in Sheikh Zayed Hospital and Tehsil Headquarters Hospital, while a control room has also been set up for better coordination.

Jamil added that heavy machinery was being used to remove passengers who were stuck in the train, adding that they were being provided with food and water.

Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed grief over the accident and called for measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Authorities said the Pakistan Army was also taking part in the rescue efforts. "Have asked Railways Minister to take emergency steps to counter decades of neglect of railway infrastructure & ensure safety standards".

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

He announced compensation of Rs 1.5 million for the families of the deceased and Rs 0.5 million each for the injured, Dawn newspaper reported. Sadiqabad: 10 Killed, 35 Injured in Trains Collision.
